Rooted Cafe, Mobile App Case Study
This was created while completing the Google UX Design Certificate: Design a simple app for a local cafe.
The Rooted app is a convenient app for a local cafe that allows users to view previous orders and access loyalty rewards. It offers ways to connect with the cafe owners and features a custom menu and a range of payment methods. Customers may order ahead or order from their seat.
01
Problem
Customers want the convenience of ordering ahead or from their seat to avoid long lines and want to be rewarded for their loyalty.
02
Solution
Develop a cafe app for ordering ahead, in-seat ordering, and accessing rewards.
03
Define Phase
Research-based personas, including a young professional and a married parent, informed the Rooted app's design to meet diverse user needs.
I conducted a competitive audit to understand the strengths and weaknesses of my competitors, which helped me to design a better application for my users.
Strengths
Moeller's Bakery has an easy ordering process, their website easy to navigate, and they offer online ordering.
Moreno's Bakery's website is easy to navigate and is visually appealing.
Starbucks' website is easy to navigate, has a mobile application, offers loyalty rewards, order customization and online ordering.
Weaknesses
Moeller's Bakery does not sort menu by category, has no mobile app, rewards or loyalty program.
Moreno's Bakery's has no mobile app or online ordering.
While Starbucks offers many options, the amount of information can be overwhelming.
05
Protoype Phase
These wireframes and prototypes illustrate the Rooted app's intuitive design for convenient ordering and rewarding experiences.
The prototype can be accessed here.
The app’s ease of use and engaging visuals were praised by study participants, who said they would use the app in a real-life setting.
“I love the app overall. It’s visually engaging and simple to navigate.”
-Kathleen, Cafe frequenter
I gained a comprehensive understanding of the UX design process, from user research to usability testing. I learned how to use a variety of UX design tools and techniques, including Figma, creating personas, and developing low and high-fidelity prototypes.
